Legislation is Moving in Iowa That Could Stop the Bakken Pipeline
Tell your legislators to support these bills!
Dear Angel,
The proposed Bakken Pipeline, which could carry up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil per day, is unprecedented for the state of Iowa. That's enough oil to fill 36 Olympic-sized swimming pools per day! No other pipeline in Iowa has carried nearly as much crude oil through our state, bringing with it even more threats to our drinking water and communities. Luckily, we have a real opportunity to stop the Bakken Pipiline — but not much time. Legislation has been introduced in Iowa that could effectively stop the Bakken Pipeline. Tell your state legislators to support this legislation to stop the Bakken Pipeline! Worst of all, through eminent domain, the proposed Bakken Pipeline project could be approved without the consent of landowners along the pipeline route. Eminent domain is meant to be used in very specific circumstances in which the public interest would be served. Iowans and the state of Iowa are not served by the proposed Bakken Pipeline. Our legislators need to support these bills to stop the Bakken Pipeline! These bills (Senate File 506 and it's companion bill, House Study Bill 249) would require at least 75 percent of landowners to voluntarily give up their property before the project could even be considered, and it also provides additional benefits to landowners. It is very unlikely that Energy Transfer Partners, the pipeline company proposing the Bakken Pipeline, would meet that requirement — moving us an important step closer to stopping this pipeline. This is common sense legislation to protect the people and the state of Iowa from this massive and destructive pipeline project. Tell your legislators to support Senate File 506 and House Study Bill 249. Senate File 506 has already made it out of committee and is waiting for a vote on the floor of the Senate. Now we need to make sure your state senator will pass it when the time comes. House Study Bill 249, is the same legislation as Senate File 506, just on the House side. We need your state representative to know that you want them to support it! Write to your legislators today and urge them to support these bills to stop the Bakken Pipeline!
